Why is MiraLax prescribed?

MiraLax is a remedy for constipation. It works by retaining water in the stool, softening it and increasing the frequency of bowel movements. It may take up to 2 to 4 days to work.

Unless your doctor directs otherwise, do not use MiraLax for more than 2 weeks. Sustained, frequent, or excessive use can upset the body's chemical balance, and can lead to dependence on laxatives.

How should you take MiraLax?

Dissolve 1 capful or packet of MiraLax powder (17 grams) in 8 ounces of water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea.

--If you miss a dose...

Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

--Storage instructions...

Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using MiraLax.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Bloating, cramps, gas, nausea

High doses may cause diarrhea and excessive frequency.

Why should MiraLax not be prescribed?

Do not take MiraLax if there's any chance that you have a bowel obstruction. Symptoms suggesting an obstruction include abdominal pain or distention, nausea, and vomiting.

Also avoid MiraLax if you are allergic to the active ingredient, polyethylene glycol.
