Mechanism of Action



May be related to analgesic properties.


Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, resulting in analgesia, anti-inflammatory activity, and inhibition of platelet aggregation.


Is thought to produce constriction of cerebral blood vessels.

Indications and Usage

Symptomatic relief of mild to moderate pain of acute musculoskeletal disorders; adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of discomfort with acute painful musculoskeletal conditions.


Patients with glaucoma, pyloric or duodenal obstruction, achalasia (eg, failure of visceral openings or sphincter muscle to relax), prostatic hypertrophy or obstructions at the bladder neck, myasthenia gravis; hypersensitivity to any component of the product.

Dosage and Administration


PO Norgesic 1 to 2 tablets tid to qid; Norgesic Forte ½ to 1 tablet tid to qid.


Store below 86°F. Protect from moisture.

Drug Interactions

Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)

Effects of anticoagulants may be enhanced by aspirin, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Uricosuric agents (probenecid)

Effects may be inhibited by aspirin.

Adverse Reactions


Tachycardia; palpitation.


Weakness; confusion; excitation; hallucinations; headache; lightheadedness; dizziness; syncope.


Urticaria and other dermatoses.


Blurred vision; dilation of the pupil; increased intraocular tension; drowsiness.


Dry mouth; nausea; vomiting; hemorrhage.


Urinary hesitancy or retention; constipation.

Reye syndrome

Has been associated with aspirin administration to children (including teenagers) with acute febrile illness.

Peptic ulcers

Use with extreme caution.

Patient Information

  • Explain name, dose, action, and potential side effects of drug.
  • Advise patient to take prescribed dose tid to qid if needed for muscle pain, muscle spasm, or limited mobility.
  • Advise patient to take without regard to meals but to take with food if GI upset occurs.
  • Instruct patient to avoid alcoholic beverages and other depressants while taking this medication.
  • Advise patient that drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision and to use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring mental alertness until tolerance is determined.
  • Advise patient to stop taking the drug and notify health care provider if any of the following occur: allergic reaction, unusual bleeding or bruising, shortness of breath, black or tarry stools, vomiting of blood or coffee ground-like material.
  • Advise women to notify health care provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Warn patient not to take any prescription or OTC drugs or dietary supplements without consulting health care provider.
  • Advise patient that follow-up visits may be necessary to monitor therapy and to keep appointments.
