Why is Cromolyn sodium prescribed?

Crolom is an eyedrop that relieves the itching, tearing, discharge, and redness caused by seasonal and chronic allergies. The drug works by preventing certain cells in the body from releasing histamine and other substances that can cause an allergic reaction. It may be prescribed alone or with a steroid medication.

Most important fact about Cromolyn sodium

In order for Crolom to work properly, you must continue to use it every day at regular intervals even if your symptoms have disappeared. It can take up to 6 weeks for your condition to clear up.

How should you use Cromolyn sodium?

Use Crolom exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow the instruction sheet that comes with the medication. Do not use more or less than required and apply it only when scheduled. To administer Crolom, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Tilt your head back.
3. Gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pocket between your eye and the lid.
4. Drop the medicine into this pocket. Let go of the eyelid. Do not place Crolom directly over the pupil of the eye.
5. Blink a few times to make sure the eye is covered with medication.
6. Close the eye and with a tissue wipe away any excess medication.
7. Do not touch the applicator tip to your eye or any other surface. This could lead to infection.
8. Do not rinse the dropper.

Use it as soon as possible. Then go back to your regular schedule.

Keep the container tightly closed and away from light. Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

You may experience temporary burning or stinging in the eye after you apply Crolom.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Allergic reaction, dryness around the eye, eye irritation, inflammation of the eyelids, itchy eyes, puffy eyes, styes, watery eyes

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to cromolyn sodium, avoid Cromolyn sodium.

Special warnings about Cromolyn sodium

Crolom has been known to cause immediate, but rare, allergic reactions marked by breathlessness, swelling, or a rash. If you develop any of these symptoms, stop using Cromolyn sodium and contact your doctor immediately.

Do not wear contact lenses while suffering from allergy-induced eye irritation and while using Crolom.

If your symptoms do not begin to improve, alert your doctor.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Cromolyn sodium

No interactions have been reported.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

There are no studies on use of Crolom with pregnant women. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor. Crolom should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether Crolom appears in human breast milk. If you are nursing and need to use Crolom, use it with caution.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS AND CHILDREN

Put 1 or 2 drops into each eye 4 to 6 times a day at evenly spaced intervals.

It is not known whether Crolom is safe and effective for children under 4 years.

Overdosage

Although there is no information on Crolom overdose, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
